Toy was messy during the dig, however a cookie sheet and towel help keep it contained. 5 and 7 yr old loved digging the pieces out. Great for a rainy day inside.
the rocks are held together by some stinky glue. Our 5 year old loved this. He got to discover the hidden treasures in the rock. Down sides. Eventually my son got tired of hitting the rock, and asked me to do it. We got to practice safety by donning the included safety glasses and doing this outside in a safe place.
Also, the silly hammer provided wasn't heavy enought to whack the rock apart. We got both the Pirate Treasure and this Dinosaur one. It smells like what I remember as Foraldehyde (but I didn't check the box to see what it really was). He loved recovering the pieces and putting together the resultant skeleton. He played with the both the pirate treasure and the skeleton for a few weeks. I used a real hammer and then changed to the provided one for detail work.
Overall, though, he loved these.
I am told he needed a bit of help in assembling the fossil but he was thrilled to discover a velociraptor in all the dirt. His parents hid the box and just gave him the dirt and told him to go at it. He did so and loved it.
Bought for our nephew who turned 5, he loved it. Got the idea from the recommended gifts for boys. I don't know any 4 or 5 year old boys who don't like to dig/play in the dirt or don't like dinosaurs, so if you aren't sure what to get, this is a great choice.
